The land and plots

Rangárslétta – A rare riverside sanctuary in South Iceland

We at Heklusýn have carefully developed 50 hectares (124 acres) of exceptionally scenic land, now known as Rangárslétta — a unique private riverside estate in the heart of South Iceland. Once part of the historic farmland of Leirubakki, the land became an independent property by the river Ytri Rangá in 2020.

Rangárslétta is distinguished by its striking natural beauty and sweeping mountain views. Set along the banks of the river Ytri Rangá, the landscape is lush and vibrant, with native birch woodland and soft moss interwoven with ancient lava fields formed by flows from Vatnajökull over 10,000 years ago. Unlike most summer-house or luxury-home developments in the Icelandic countryside, Rangárslétta is intentionally low-density: only 12–14 houses will be built across the entire 50- hectare estate. Each residence therefore enjoys an expansive private parcel of land, generous space, and uninterrupted tranquility.

From every lot, breathtaking panoramic views unfold across the surrounding highlands and river valley. Among the landmarks visible from Rangárslétta are Mount Búrfell, Hekla, Bjólfell, Vatnafjöll, Tindfjöll, Selsundsfjall, Eyjafjallajökull and Þríhyrningur in Fljótshlíð. The wild flora and untouched character of each parcel reflect Iceland’s distinctive natural heritage - creating an environment that is both pristine and deeply atmospheric.

Heklusýn – Design homes in harmony with nature

Heklusýn ehf was founded by Skúli K. Skúlason and Sigurður E. Guðmundsson together with their spouses.

The name Heklusýn refers to the mountain Hekla, i.e. Heklusýn means: A view to Hekla as the mountain can be seen from all lots.

The company's vision is to create beautiful, high-quality year-round homes—carefully designed to blend with the unique landscape of the Rangár Plains.

Each house is designed by Studio Halla Friðgeirs, according to the strictest standards for appearance and quality. Bright and open spaces, spacious common areas, and ceilings that frame the view and natural light. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring each house blends into its natural surroundings with minimal disturbance to existing lava formations, moss, and native vegetation.

Heklusýn homes are spacious and family-oriented, typically offering three to six bedrooms, two to three bathrooms, a dedicated laundry room, and a striking open-plan living area. All homes feature a partially covered sun deck, extending outdoor living and usability in Iceland’s variable climate.

The houses are delivered fully finished on the outside, with parking lots, a landscaped lot, and exterior lighting, but are ready for interior finishing. We can, of course, complete the houses for buyers if desired, but this is done in consultation with them and is billed at an hourly rate.
